The Weider Total Body Works 5000 – Effective and Less Expensive than the Total Gym

The Weider Total Body Works 5000 is a low cost, entry-level gym that uses body weight as the source of resistance. This glide board trainer has features that are very similar to the popular Total Gym trainers endorsed by Chuck Norris. Yet, here is the difference -- it costs just $149 whereas the comparable Total Gym 2000 is $599.

The Gym

The Weider Total Body Works 5000 is a simple machine: the pulley attaches to the glide board and the user’s body weight becomes the “resistance.” With over 100 body-shaping exercises, this glide board trainer helps you firm up your entire body, while you increase overall strength, endurance, and flexibility. The trainer comes with a foot platform (called a Squat Stand), a pull-up bar, and resistance bands. By using one of the bands, you will be adding up to 50-lbs of additional resistance.

The features on the Total Body Works 5000 are:

Weider Total Body Works 5000
  • 250 lb User Weight Capacity
  • Four Adjustable Power Bands
  • Adjustable Incline with 7 levels
  • Warranty: 90 days parts
  • Workout Guide
  • No Assembly Required

The Buzz

The pull-up bar and the foot platform are key features of the Total Body Works 5000 since neither is offered on the comparable Total Gym 2000 which sells for $599 but has no squat stand or bars! You would have to upgrade to the 3000 model at $850 to get those two features. This Weider trainer is best used for upper body strength training (it’s not as good on the lower body), but you can put the Total Body Works 5000 on the highest incline setting and get a really good burn in your workout. It’s solid, easy to use, and highly effective for burning fat and building muscle tissue.

The best home gym reviews we’ve seen on the Total Body Works 5000 are the ones that are written by happy owners who have used many other home gyms yet found this Weider system to be a better product -- and for a fraction of the price of anything else. They all like that the trainer is almost ready to go right out of the box. The complicated parts are already assembled so the new user only has three components to put together before starting their first workout -- in about five minutes.

Our Take

You cannot beat Weider’s $149 price tag on the Total Body Works 5000. It could use an ankle strap but you can buy one of those at any sporting goods store to rig your own inner/outer thigh Pilates-style workout. It is light enough at 79 lbs to store out of the way which is important to people who don’t have room for any other kind of gym or a rack of free weights. It makes more noise and it is not as smooth as the Total Gym, but if price is your highest priority, go with this one. The only question remains is its durability, and even there the Weider Total Body Works 5000 holds up well according to thousands of satisfied customers. This model is Recommended.
