The Weider Club Bench – A Budget Gym for Beginners

The Weider Club Bench is a budget home gym system that fits in the corner of a room yet offers a range of exercises on its multi-workout station design. It’s a cheap home gym that offers many features; unfortunately, it doesn’t offer much in the way of quality or comfort.

The Gym

The Weider Club Bench (also known as the Weider Club 4870 and sold exclusively online) is a V-shaped corner design. The home gym has seven workout stations including a foldaway Military Press station, chest fly, and high pulley with lat bar. The list of features on the Weider 4870 Club Bench system includes:

Weider Club Bench
  • 150 lbs. DuraStack Weight Plates
  • 300 lbs total resistance
  • High Pulley Station, 15+ Exercises
  • Low Pulley Station, 40+ Exercises
  • Foldaway Military Press
  • Rolled Preacher Pad
  • Leg Press
  • 4-roll Leg Developer
  • Adjustable Seats
  • Dimensions – 81"L x 89"W x 82"H
  • 90 Days Limited Warranty
  • Accessories included – Ankle strap w/handle, Lat Bar, Exercise Chart

The Buzz

On the plus side, the Weider Club Bench offers the 2:1 resistance ratio on the cabling allowing the user to leverage the stack from a 150 lb max to a 300 lb max. Another plus that fitness trainers will give to the Weider 4870 is its low, entry-level price tag which may entice people to take up strength training at home. You don’t find many seven-station, two-seat home gyms for under $800. The problem is that Weider had to cut corners to get the price down and that means the Club Bench is not big on quality, ergonomic fit, or comfort.

There aren’t many home gym reviews written up on the Weider 4870 Club Bench but you can check reviews for the Weider Pro 4250 and the Pro 4950 which are very similar in design to the Club Bench. Those gyms sell at big box stores such as Walmart and Sears for under $400, and generally get good reviews. Unfortunately, those satisfied customers are not educated about what makes a quality home gym and they don’t know what they could have had. While the Weider 4870 has all the standard features you might be seeking in a multi-gym, it is likely you will outgrow this system in a year.

Our Take

The Weider 4870 Club Bench, which sells for around $749, is covered by a short 90-day warranty -- that should tell you something about the inferior quality. Weider has a respected name in bodybuilding, because of its founder Joe Weider, but this Icon Fitness product is a flashy cheap home gym marketed to the masses who want to dabble in weightlifting. If you are about to make a serious investment in a home gym, you can get better value for your money than the Weider Club Bench. In the same price range, you should consider a Body Solid EXM1500S or a Powertec Leverage Gym.
