The Weider Club 290 W Weight Bench – A Beginner’s Bench Press/Squat Gym

The Weider Club 290 W is an example of a weight bench press/squat combo. Since the weightlifting bench is the core of any gym, it pays to do your research and get the right one for your needs. More than anything, you want something that will mesh with your plans for the future expansion of your home gym. With that goal in mind, you need to keep looking; there are dozens of weight benches out there that beat this design.

The Bench

The Weider Club 290 W has a Flat-Incline-Decline bench that is detachable from the uprights. It has a 90° Shoulder Press Bench, plus the Seated Leg Developer, including Leg Extension / Leg Curl. The uprights have adjustable safety spotters.

The Club 290 W Weight Bench features:

Weider Club 290 W
  • Detachable Bench
  • Walk-in Squat Station
  • Adjustable Safety Spotters
  • Mid to Olympic Adjustable Uprights
  • Preacher Attachment
  • 6-Roll Leg Developer

The Buzz

Weider's Club 290 W is an entry-level weight bench with basic features. Trainers will point out that Weider has a few products that are outstanding, and others that don’t make the grade. This bench falls into the latter category. There is nothing especially wrong with it in terms of height or width, but you can easily find a serious bench/rack combo that offers a higher max weight limit, and at a better price, than the Club 290 W. On the plus side, the uprights can accommodate both standard and Olympic barbells and the seat is removable so you can access the uprights to perform squats. On the downside, the adjustable spotters aren’t wide enough to feel secure when bench pressing, and the frame isn’t angled.

Our Take

At $399, the Club 290 W is not recommended. There are multi-bench combos that sell for under $350 that will equal the Weider weight bench; on the other hand, you could buy a quality unit that is better-built; for example, the Body Solid Olympic Bench for the same price as the Weider Club 290 W. A third option is to save a little more money until you can get something like the Powertec Workbench Rack System. It costs a little more at $590, but it is an outstanding weight bench press/squat rack at a decent price.
