The Buzz

Think sliding back and forth on the Total Gym XLS is easy? That’s where resistance comes in. You are lifting, rowing, or pressing a ratio of 5% to 60% of your own body weight depending on the level of incline you choose. For example, if you weigh 180 lbs and set the incline to the highest level, you would be lifting 108 lbs or 60% of your own weight. Strength training pros point out that if you are looking to build big muscles, then this isn’t the gym for you. But if you want to get cardio, lose weight, and get lean and toned, then check out the machines in the Total Gym line.

People used to pay thousands of dollars to train the Pilates method. It is a phenomenal, life-long fitness regime, easier than Yoga, and it gives the participant a lean, healthy, strong body. Users of the Total Gym glideboards are finding the XLS home gym to be an affordable alternative to Joseph Pilates’ program that was once limited to professional dancers and celebrities who could afford to attend one of his certified studios. The XLS glideboard from Total Gym® feels great and mimics about 80 of the 500+ Pilates Reformer exercises, but costs far less than a traditional Reformer.

Our Take

We love the ergonomic feel of the XLS Total Gym and the way it gives the user a full body workout. It’s too bad that these machines are sold on TV Infomercials because people associate that type of marketing with cheap products, and that’s not true in this case. This is a quality gym that sells for around $1,448 (MSRP $1,948) which is about half the price of an Allegro Pilates Reformer or another online bestseller, the Stott Pilates Reformer. On the other hand, if the Total Gym XLS is more gym than you are looking for, you should look at the less expensive 3000 model which you can often find on sale for under $900.
