The Star Trac Functional Trainer - Get the Most Out of Your Machine

The Star Trac Functional Trainer has adjustable vertical towers with multiple exercise options to target the upper body and core stabilizer muscles as well as doing Range of Motion exercises specific to your favorite sport.

The Gym

The Star Trac Functional Trainer is a cable crossover system with two pulleys on each tower that load with independent weight stacks. The pulleys allow you to begin any motion from a low, mid, or high starting point. Choose from a variety of attachments to hit the chest (pulls, crossovers), abs (crunches), back (cable flies), triceps (press downs), biceps (cable curls), and legs (extensions). It does not include a bench so do factor in that additional cost in your planned purchase.

The Star Trac Functional home trainer includes:

Star Trac Functional Trainer
  • Dual 180 lb. weight stacks
  • Dual Pulleys with 1:2 Resistance Ratio
  • Multi-position pull-up bar

This Star Trac model is ergonomically comfortable, very sturdy, easy to use, and has a comfortable pulley motion. Almost all of the home gym reviews are favorable in terms of the quality in the equipment and the many exercises you can do. These tower design functional trainers are also advantageous if you are limited for space in your basement or home workout room.

Our Take

Beyond the sticker shock of the $2,595 price tag, the Star Trac Functional Cable Crossover Trainer offers a smooth workout experience similar to what you will find on a Life Fitness G5 Home Gym. We feel this Star Trac home gym has some drawbacks though. For example, while you can do a form of bench press on a cable crossover machine while lying on a bench, it isn’t ideal.

In addition, functional trainers are fine for doing leg kick outs and extensions in an ankle strap, but there is no isolated leg press to hit the quads. So while the hammies and calves can be hit, the bigger muscles in the legs will have to be worked on in lunges or on another machine. For this price, we agree that the quality is there, but we pass on the design and functions of the Star Trac Functional Trainer.
