The Powertec Shape System - A No Cable Change Trainer

The Powertec Shape System is a functional trainer that provides a user-friendly workout for beginners as well as the average fitness enthusiast who wants the convenience and effectiveness of a cable-crossover system.

The System

The Powertec Shape System is a no-cable change system, meaning you won’t have any down time between set-ups. You can perform cross-over exercises including rows, presses, pulls and more. It also has a convenient chin-up bar, as well as a Leg Developer for curls and extensions on the bench.

The Powertec Shape System features are:

Powertec Shape System
  • Cable Crossover Trainer
  • Chin-up Bar
  • Carriage capacity: 250 lbs
  • Folding Flat/Incline bench with leg extension
  • 250 lb User Weight Capacity
  • Dimensions/Weight: 30"L x 79"W x 84"H, 261 lbs
  • Warranty — Lifetime frame; 2 yrs on parts (bearings, spring pins), 1 year on pads, grips
  • Accessories — 2 single handles, 24" straight bar, 36" straight bar

The Buzz

Powertec’s Shape System uses a nylon bushing driven carriage. While it still delivers a smooth and quiet operation, it does not provide the type of ergonomic feel you want from a crossover cable machine. The nylon set-up is not as good as a commercial linear bearing carriage, which is why this home gym sells for under $1000, and often under $600 on sale. One other drawback of the Shape System: some trainers take issue with the fact that this Powertec unit does not have a standalone bench (it folds out of the way like an ironing board).

Compare Powertec Equipment at BigFitness

Smaller users who have been working out on their systems for awhile report in home gym reviews that they are pleased with their purchases. They felt the Shape System is sturdy and handled the largest weight load resistance well. On the other hand, larger users feel this frame is too narrow. Owners said they chose this Powertec unit over a more expensive selectorized stack at $1500 to $2000 because of the money they saved.

Our Take

Powertec is best known for making plate-loaded leverage systems yet the company has responded to the growing popularity trend of functional training systems by introducing the $999 Shape System (model PS-S). While we are enthusiastic about Powertec equipment, the Shape’s pulley performance left a lot to be desired. If you want to invest in a good cable crossover design, we suggest you try the Body Solid Functional Trainer Center. It’s more expensive than the Powertec Shape System, but functional trainers generally run $2,000 - $4,000, and Body Solid will get you an outstanding set-up for under $1,800.
