PowerBlock Adjustable Dumbbells: The Legendary Block Weights

PowerBlock adjustable dumbbells are space-efficient weights that take the place of dozens of fixed-weight dumbbells. Instead of adding bulk onto the ends of a bar, the Powerblocks work as a weight stack; the handle is located within the first weight which sits inside a heavier weight, and then another, and so on. This design and function gives PowerBlock adjustable dumbbells the distinctive block appearance.

The Weights

PowerBlock Adjustable Dumbbells Adjusting the weight amount is simply a matter of moving the u-shaped selector pin into the appropriate slot between thin plates. Then, when you lift the weight away from the base, all the PowerBlocks above the pin lift with the handle, giving you a dumbbell of a weight you select.

There are three sets ranging in max weight from 24 lbs to 90 lbs:

The PowerBlock SportBlock Dumbell Set ($184) adjusts from 3 to 24 lbs in 3 lb increments (3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24 lbs) for a max weight of 24 lbs per dumbbell. (Note: This is not an expandable set.) These DBs replaces 8 pair of fixed hex dumbbells that would have a combined weight of 216 lbs.

The PowerBlock Personal Dumbbell Set ($338) adjusts from 5 to 45 lbs in increments of 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, and 45 lbs. It replaces 9 pair of dumbbells that would have a combined weight of 450 lbs.

The PowerBlock Elite Dumbbell Set ($697) adjusts from 5 to 90 lbs in 5 or 10 lb increments for a max weight of 90 lbs in each hand. It replaces 28 pair of dumbbells that would have a combined weight of 2565 lbs.

The Buzz

Trainers and gym rats are well acquainted with PowerBlocks as well as their main competitor, the Bowflex SelectTech dumbbells. Despite the futuristic square style, the Powerblocks impress trainers who prefer them to any other brand of adjustable dumbbells.

Home gym users have declared these to be the best adjustable dumbbells they’ve ever used, and the majority vote for them hands down over the SelectTechs in terms of comfort and durability. The most important point they stress is the “feel” of PowerBlock dumbbells. Despite the blocky appearance, users love the ergonomic feel due to the superior balance, and especially the padded grips (no need for weightlifting gloves!).

Our Take

Users of free weights range from people who own thousands of dollars of equipment to those that use Powerblock adjustable dumbbells, a bench, and nothing else. If you don’t have room for a bulky home gym machine, or a full rack of dumbbells, get these. They will be the last dumbbells you ever buy. Highly Recommended.
