The Marcy Diamond Elite Smith System – Compact, Great for Beginners

The Marcy Diamond Elite Smith system is an entry-level design that includes all the basic exercises. The surprise in this gym is found in its smooth pulley system and the linear bearings in the carriage.

The Buzz

On the plus side, equipment experts are swift to acknowledge that the Marcy Diamond Elite System has made at least one impressive upgrade, from bushings to more heavy-duty and smooth running linear bearings. Other components on the unit include three 3/4" nylon pulleys with sealed ball bearings, 2000-lb tensile strength aircraft cable, 2" x 2 3/4" heavy-duty tubular steel frame with a 7-degree slant, and a commercial grade bar and safety catches. The Smith home gym system comes with several accessories, plus a multi-function bench with a leg developer and preacher curl pad.

While it isn’t in the quality range of say, the $1800 Body Solid Series 7 machine, owners of this system have been nearly universally pleased with their purchase. Some cons to note include the lack of adjustability in the pec deck and the leg developer, and the cable cross feature is also limited in its range of motion. And it is somewhat of a challenge to put together, but if you can get past that brief list of annoying things, then the Marcy Diamond Elite Smith machine makes a lot of sense for the low price.

Our Take

Haughty gym rats will turn up their nose at any Smith that costs less than $1,400, but for $670, this compact Marcy Diamond Elite Smith system is a pleasant surprise that will serve beginners well. More advanced lifters, however, would be better off getting a power rack at this price, or pay more and get a quality Smith machine that will last a lifetime.
