For accelerated gains in muscle mass, leverage home gyms are one of the most effective tools you can use combining the feel and movement of free weights with the safety of a machine.
Powertec debuted leverage home gyms in 1998 and are still the leading manufacturer of them, although Body Solid and Stamina are two companies which now make smaller club leverage gyms of good quality.
A Lever Arm Machine
A home gym leverage system is a multi-gym that uses plates for resistance rather than a selectorized stack with cables and pulleys. Additionally, most of the leverage systems will require you to buy your own set of Free Weight Olympic Plates.
Even though these leverage systems are plate-loaded machines, the design is quite different than power racks and Smith machine home gyms: it has a lever arm attached to the frame that acts as a fulcrum when handling the weight. The user loads plates onto the lever arm just like a barbell. The arm, of course, is attached to the frame. There is no worry about balancing a bar, or dropping the weighted arm on your chest or head because of this design.
You can do dozens of compound exercises on these leverage home gyms including squats, presses, flyes, seated rows, ab crunches, shoulder press, preacher curls, triceps press downs, and more. Additionally, options to a leverage system can include:
A lat pulldown for the back
A low pulley station for seated rows and leg extensions
A pec deck for working the chest and arms
A leg extension station, which is a roller-shaped T attachment mounted at the bottom of a bench
Using a home gym leverage system has several key advantages over other multi-gym systems. For starters, it puts the user at the correct position, much as if he was lifting a barbell. Lifting is then done in a controlled manner and the resistance feels natural – again, much like lifting a barbell. Another advantage is that these gyms do not need much maintenance. Unlike home gyms that use cables, pulleys, cams, and rods, leverage gyms don’t suffer from the snapped power rods and frayed cables of those other systems.
Also, since they are designed to last forever, leverage home gyms have good resale value – should you ever decide to part with one or will eventually want to upgrade to something else.
Bigger Muscles, Faster
One caution: leverage home gyms are for serious weight training and aren’t recommended for people who don’t really, really love strength training. Thousands of bodybuilders, pro athletes, fitness trainers, and gym rats use leverage systems because they allow the user to maximize lifting time and work to failure. Now that can be a dangerous training regime using free weights and lifting alone, but it is never a problem with a loaded lever arm. Working to failure accelerates your gains, allowing the muscles to break down, creating bigger and stronger muscles and in less time.
