The Caribou III Multi Gym - With Cable-Cross, It’s Two Machines in One

The Buzz

The Caribou III has Oilite bushings that glide over solid chrome rods on a square carriage. This should be a no-nonsense feature to use -- Smiths need just a quick turn of the wrist to lock into the safety catch. Trainers point out that tired users have had trouble getting the correct tilt on the bar to lock in. If the spotter pins are too low (as in positioned just above this rather tall bench), then you can end up with the bar on your chest and pinned on the bench.

Pros: There are a few pros to the Caribou III system, i.e., the heavy-duty construction of this multi gym, and the fact that you don’t have to swap out cables to switch from the lat pull down to the pec dec exercises. Cons: On the other hand, home gym reviews complain that the bench interferes with the pec deck seat, and there’s not much for the legs here as it is more of an upper body group of stations … and, of course, the odd problem of having to fish around for the carriage holes while you are exhausted and holding a heavy bar.

Our Take

The Caribou III Multi Gym Package from Yukon Fitness sells for around $1,399 to $1,599. It has different models, for example, the CII-140 comes without the Cross-Over Attachments, or the rack alone sells for about $600 and the bench for $250. Any way you look at it, without the selectorized weight stack included, this Smith and Cable Cross duo package is an extremely over-priced gym.
